Ok. I am going to tackle blogging about interview fundamentals from the potential employee perspective. Interviewing is a nerve wracking exercise that no one likes. Did you know that 75% of all first interviews that are “NO’s” are decided on within the first 10 minutes? Truth. What does that mean? It means that the hiring manager made a judgement about hiring the person based on very little…and that “little” was almost all about appearance, presence, handshake, eye contact and initial communications. All things that you can practice and prepare for. Here is a quick check list of things to do before an interview:

A. Dress for your audience. If you don’t know how they will dress make the mistake of “over dressing”. A suit and tie or a nice business dress/suit will NEVER hurt you. Being underdressed will.

B. Woman wear less makeup and perfume. Men limit the cologne. Smokers, don’t smoke after you have showered. Chew nicotine gum or use a patch. Non smokers can smell smokers a mile away.

C. Wear simple colors. Go conservative. No crazy ties.

D. Bring something to write on. Bring an extra resume. Having something in your hands gives you something to “hold on to” and shows interest in them. I actually think asking “do you mind if I take notes” at the beginning of the interview is very powerful.

E. The first meeting (the first minute) is critical. Look the person in the eyes, make a good handshake and say “thank you for having me here today, I have been excited to meet you”. Remember, everyone wants to be “wanted”. That starts the interview with a “you’re important” and “I’m respectful”.

These are just a few things to prepare for that are quite easy. In my next blog I will talk some about interview strategies and what to expect from each one!
